Sask. government set to require elementary and high schools to fly provincial flag

While the Government of Saskatchewan is making many amendments to its Education Act, including the much-talked-about pronoun policy, another possible change will make it mandatory for schools to fly the provincial flag.

The Government of Saskatchewan is amending The Education Act 1995 to make flying the Saskatchewan flag mandatory at elementary and high schools across the province, except for on-reserve schools.

“The development of attitudes, understandings and skills that support active and responsible citizenship is foundational to Saskatchewan curricula, and the provincial flag is an important part of our history and culture,” the Ministry of Education said.

If passed, Saskatchewan will follow in the footsteps of Alberta, which already requires the provincial flag to be flown at their schools.

The Ministry added that it will be working with school divisions to determine their flag inventory and next steps to assist them in ensuring the provincial flag is flown at each school.
