Yesterday morning after work I was off to see my dentist. The crown he had put in over 20 years ago finally outlived it’s usefulness, which meant what was left of the tooth supporting the crown had to come out to make way for some bridge work. I didn’t know what to expect, but I really wasn’t looking forward to it.
I made it to his office at 11 and was ushered into the chair within minutes. Why is it, whenever there is something being done that you’re not looking forward to, the dentist is right on schedule? It’s never like that when I go for a cleaning. Usually I have to wait at least half an hour to get in for that!
My dentist, Bill Moyer, is the best one I’ve ever been to. If I’d of had a dentist like him growing up I wouldn’t have spent my childhood being petrified of dentist appointments! Nowadays, there isn’t anything painful about a visit to the dentist. The dentist even numbs your gums before giving you a needle. That’s one profession that’s come a long way in 45 years!
A couple of weeks ago when I went to have my crown looked at, Bill told me what he had to do and said it would only be about 5 minutes of work. He then told me he wouldn’t show me what tools he was going to use because he didn’t want me to get nervous. Well, if he didn’t want me to get nervous, he shouldn’t have told me THAT!
Sure enough, when I got into the chair yesterday I noticed his assistant had lined up about five different tools on his counter. I thought to myself, “He’d better be using those to work on his car during his lunch break, or I’m in trouble.” Nope. They were all for me.
True to his word, when he finally got down to work and dug out what remained of my tooth, it was no more than five minutes. Plus, I didn’t feel a thing.
The strangest thing about the visit, aside from getting started right on time, was the fact that I was the only patient in the office! I guess they wanted the place empty in case I started screaming.
All in all, it was a good appointment and the worst is done. Now, bring on that bridge!
