People watching the crisis halfway across the world in Ukraine unfold might be feeling helpless, but there is a way to contribute.
Gail Poulin, with the Canadian Red Cross’ provincial chapter, said their organization has organized an appeal for monetary donations.
“At this time we’re asking for monetary donations so we can support those who has been displaced with those critical needs that are being asked for,” said Poulin.
Poulin said those needs include housing, food and anything that will help with people displaced. She said the Red Cross and Red Crescent has boots on the ground in Ukraine.
“This appeal will go to help those people who have been displaced and I think that’s the most important part, is getting basic needs to those people,” Poulin said.
The Canadian Red Cross has boots on the ground in Ukraine and the area.
“Donations to this time to the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal will enable the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement to respond to humanitarian needs resulting from almost eight years of conflict,” she said. “As well as preparedness and response efforts due to heightened tensions in Ukraine.”
Poulin said support will address immediate and ongoing relief efforts, long-term recovery and resilience as needs arise.
“This is both in Ukraine and surrounding countries, including all of those who are displaced.”
At this point, the crisis seems like it’s just starting but the Red Cross movement is committed to helping those in need.
“We will be on the ground assisting in humanitarian needs when necessary, specifically helping those who are needing this sort of support,” she said. “These funds will be used to fund those needs that are necessary at this time. But this is an ongoing campaign and we will be there to support as best as we can.”
The feral government has announced that they will match donations up to $10 million.
