Pats take 5-4 shootout win over Royals

They needed a shootout, but the Regina Pats came away with a 5-4 win over the visiting Victoria Royals Friday night at the Brandt Centre.

It was a back and forth game which saw both teams take turns at holding the lead.

Carson Denomie broke a 2-2 tie a couple minutes into the third to give the Pats a 3-2 advantage. However their lead slipped away in the span of a couple minutes thanks to goals from Brandon Cutler and Alex Bolshakov, giving the Royals a 4-3 advantage.

Past the halfway point of the third, Logan Nijhoff lifted the Pats out of a regulation loss by scoring his 10th of the season and tying the game at 4-4.

There were no heroes in the overtime period, meaning the teams had to settle it in a shootout.

Cole Dubinsky was the lone goal scorer as Donovan Buskey stopped all of Victoria’s chances to give Regina the two points.

The Pats are off for the next few days ahead of their visit to the Sasktel Centre on Wednesday when they battle the Saskatoon Blades.
