New unemployment numbers from Stats Canada released Friday shows Saskatchewan sitting with the lowest rate in the country.

The numbers show Saskatchewan sitting with a number of 7.2 percent which is well below the national rate of 9.4 percent.

Saskatchewan’s seasonally adjusted employment grew by 2,200 jobs (+0.4 per cent) on a month-to-month basis

In a release, Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison says while Saskatchewan has not been immune to the global impacts of COVID-19, the province has shown incredible resiliency as we lead Canada’s economic recovery.

While those numbers are positive, it is still well down from the 2019 figure of 5.6 percent.  Stats Canada says the unemployment rate in 2020 averaged 8.4 percent which is higher than it was in the downturn of the 80’s and 90’s when the number was 8.3 percent with last year’s rate being the highest one the province has seen since 1976 according to Canada’s number-cruncher.
