The Government of Saskatchewan unveiled new initiatives to enhance and expand the utilization of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) across the province’s healthcare system.

To increase the role of Nurse Practitioners, the Ministry of Health disclosed plans to pilot a novel model for independently operated, publicly funded NP clinics. These clinics are poised to bolster access to primary healthcare services, offering patients an additional avenue to seek care.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) will explore further opportunities to expand the service areas for Nurse Practitioners, including in settings other than primary health care.

“Our Health Human Resources Action Plan has demonstrated success in various rural, regional, and northern communities,” highlighted Health Minister Hindley. “We extend our appreciation to the Nurse Practitioners who have contributed to this success, and we are pleased to be creating more opportunities for Nurse Practitioners across the province.”

To address the healthcare needs of rural, regional, and northern communities, the government has committed to establishing 25 new Nurse Practitioner positions over the upcoming year under the SHA. These positions will be distributed across SHA clinics and integrated into primary healthcare teams.
