Latest crop report says Sask faced wild weather this past week

The latest provincial crop report says Saskatchewan farmers faced some wild weather this past week.

Provincial crops analyst Cory Jacob says hail, severe winds and heavy rain caused some crop damage.

He says there was hail in several areas including Eston, Ogema, Kindersley and Rosetown.

Jacob says Frobisher, about 250 kilometers southeast of Regina, had the heaviest rain this week at 90 millimeters or almost 4 inches.

Jacob says several centres had over 25 millimeters of rain including Regina, Kyle, Biggar and Saltcoats.

He says recent rainfall has improved crops and is hoping for average or close to average production.

Jacob says crop damage was also caused by lack of moisture and insects like grasshoppers and aphids.

He adds there are also plant diseases like root rot causing crop damage.

Haying is 8 percent baled with production expected to be below normal.
