Tornado touchdown in Red Pheasant Cree Nation and damaging wind gusts in Saskatoon

After Thursday’s widespread tornado warnings in Saskatchewan, there was only one touchdown and some damaging wind.

Environment Canada says there was one confirmed tornado near Red Pheasant Cree Nation, but it was weak and didn’t cause any damage.

The weather agency’s Justin Shaer says there were very strong wind gusts in the Saskatoon area. “There were wind gusts of around 85, or just slightly stronger, kilometres per hour. There was also some quarter sized hail in Borden and I believe got Tuffnell golf ball sized hail.”

Shaer says there was sporadic damage reported online in the Saskatoon area. “Something being blown off a roof and onto some trucks in what looked like to be an industrial area. It didn’t look like widespread damage, but with any wind gusts that strong you can expect some sporadic damage.”

He adds that so far this summer, Saskatchewan is close to average for confirmed tornadoes. “Over the course of the summer anywhere around about a dozen tornadoes is average for Saskatchewan. I believe we are just a bit over that, but nothing out of the realm of possible.”

Environment Canada says if you have any pictures or videos of what you believe is a tornado, you can post it on Twitter using #skstorm.
