The federal government is easing travel restrictions for Canadians looking to go abroad for holidays. the change is one that is being welcomed by the Regina airport authority.
Airport CEO James Bogusz says the change is great for the airport – but also the city.
“This is a great day, not just for the airport, but for all of the businesses in southern Saskatchewan that rely on customers coming from outside of the country, United States, businesses that hold conferences, tourism, hoteliers, this is an amazing day.”
As of April 1st fully vaccinated travelers reentering Canada no longer need a pre departure COVID-19 test. For travelers this eliminates the worry of testing positive for COVID-19 while traveling and having to provide a negative test and potentially quarantine for 10 days. For most travelers this is just not a viable option. Bogusz says this is a crucial first step in normalizing travel again.
Most of the travel experience is managed through federal processes which still require usage of the free ArriveCan app to reduce wait times for border crossing, and additionally the potential for a randomized COVID-19 test. Bogusz says even if you are selected for the COVID screening there is no requirement for isolation.
Masks are still required when flying on planes, and in most airports when moving through security screening.
“Restrictions will continue to ease as we turn a page from the pandemic and move to a regular lifestyle with more regular travel” added Bogusz..
One thing to consider is the destination country and their individual restrictions. Some parts of the world still require negative tests upon entry – notably the US and Europe. Travelers should try and have the requirements of the destination country nailed down before arriving at the airport suggests Bogusz.
2022 promises a lot more flight activity moving into the summer with WestJet and AirCanada bringing prices that don’t currently reflect fuel prices and inflation. Capacity is higher which Bogusz says is leading to very competitive pricing for major Canadian routes.
The addition of ultra low cost carriers like Flare Airlines and Swoop Airlines will provide even more economical flights on very competitive pricing structures for travelers adds Bogusz. “While we don’t think we will be right back to pre-pandemic levels just yet – we will be at 60% to 70%.”
