Huskies HC Scott Flory excited for Saskatchewan Roughriders Foundation Winter Classic

All the shades of green in the province will be represented in the upcoming Saskatchewan Roughriders Foundation Winter Classic on Saturday, March 18 in Saskatoon.

The hockey game will feature current players from the Roughriders, members of the team’s alumni, former NHL players and other celebrity players. University of Saskatchewan Huskies Head Coach Scott Flory will also be competing in the game.

Flory joined Michael Ball on the SportsCage on Tuesday to preview the upcoming hockey game.

The Huskies head coach said he was happy to accept the invitation to participate in the Foundation’s Winter Classic. He noted the Saskatchewan Roughriders Foundation is a supporter of the Huskies football program.

Like most kids in Saskatchewan, hockey was one of Flory’s first loves in sports. He still plays the sport in his spare time and maintains his skill in skating.

“I can do my cuts and C’s and do some crossovers so I’m alright.”

The Huskies head coach said he spent time between the pipes as a goalie when he played minor hockey, but his football instincts led him outside of the crease.

“Then I got to a point where I wanted to hit someone and I couldn’t hit anybody so I’m like, forget this business. I got into football more.”

Even though Flory did not have much interest in goaltending as a player, growing up he enjoyed watching Patrick Roy and the Montreal Canadiens. The former Alouette linemen said it was a thrill going to Canadiens games when he was in Montreal. He also has a deep appreciation for the history of the organization and had a lot of fun meeting famous members of the team.

Next Saturday’s Saskatchewan Roughriders Foundation Winter Classic will feature two sides captained by current Rider kicker Brett Lauther and former Riders receiver Rob Bagg.

Some details of the hockey game were announced on Wednesday. Before the opening faceoff, there will be a special Bring ‘Em out entrance along with a ceremonial puck drop.

During the game, Gainer the Gopher will make an appearance,  and there will be an interactive format during hockey game.

Following the contest, fans will have the chance to get autographs from the celebrity players and Gainer.

The Winter Classic will take place at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon with a 7:00 faceoff.

The proceeds of the Winter Classic will go to Kidsport to help kids get involved with hockey and football.
