New Year means new taxes and increases

The new decade has arrived and with it means some changes as some things are going up.

Regina City Council called for a property tax increase of 3.25 percent which is the lowest increase in a decade.  It means your tax bill is going up by just over $67 a year. There is also a three-percent  increase in the utilities tax meaning an extra four dollars a month for the average homeowner.

Cemetery fees are also going up in Regina by about four percent.

Thanks to the carbon tax. your SaskPower bill will be going up as the tax goes from $20 a tonne to $30.  SaskPower estimates this increase will come in at around $22 a year

In addition,  there are now new smoke alarm regulations in effect.  Rental properties are now required to hard-wired smoke alarms with a battery back-up on levels with sleeping rooms. This was to be done by January 1 with landlords in a position to be prosecuted if the guidelines are not met.
