Riders trade Zach Collaros to Argonauts

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have traded quarterback Zach Collaros to the Toronto Argonauts in exchange for a conditional fourth round selection in the 2020 CFL Draft.

The move leaves Cody Fajardo as the unquestioned #1 quarterback for the Riders. And it leaves Fajardo without his closest confidant.

“Zach’s helped me tremendously over these last six weeks. He’s been very beneficial to me. And that’s just the kind of guy Zach is. He’s a team-first guy and I think he’s one of the smartest quarterbacks I’ve been around.”

Seeing the success Fajardo was having, the Argos reached out a few days ago to see if the Riders were interested in trading Collaros.

“We were contacted by Toronto within the last week,” says Vice President and General Manager Jeremy O’Day. “That continued over the next couple of days.”

Collaros hasn’t played since suffering a concussion in Week 1. But O’Day says the QB was close to returning.

“Zach, just in the last couple of days, has reported that he doesn’t have any more symptoms of a concussion. And he’s also passed his baseline testing.”

“When you look at where we’re at and how Cody’s playing with the offense, it certainly makes the decision (to trade Collaros) a little bit easier.”

The 30-year-old Collaros played 14 games for the Club in 2018. He threw for 2,999 yards and nine touchdowns leading to 10 wins.

Over eight CFL seasons, Collaros has thrown for 16,758 yards and 92 touchdowns. He played in the 2014 Grey Cup with the Tiger-Cats and won the Grey Cup in 2012 with Toronto as the back-up quarterback.
