September 28th is Test Your Smoke Alarm Day.

Recent data from the National Fire Protection Association shows a shocking reality: nearly three out of five fire deaths occur in homes lacking smoke alarms or where alarms fail to operate. That statistic alone shows the importance of having functioning smoke alarms in every home.

As the first line of defense against fires, smoke alarms provide an early warning that can mean the difference between life and death. “Smoke alarms save lives,” stated SPSA President and Fire Commissioner Marlo Pritchard. Regular testing ensures that alarms are functioning correctly and allows families to be prepared in case of an emergency.

On Test Your Smoke Alarm Day, you should:

• Check the installation of smoke alarms in your home.
• Test alarms to ensure they sound properly.
• Change batteries to maintain functionality.

As of July 2022, a Saskatchewan law mandates that all residential buildings must have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. This legislation is designed to protect residents and reduce the risk of fire-related injuries and fatalities.
