Thousands of job seekers are descending on Regina

REGINA — Thousands of people in Regina are attending Career Fair Canada at the Queensbury Convention Centre on Wednesday.

The fair sees major job corporations, including the Saskatchewan Health Authority, Suncrest College and the Ontario Provincial Police, looking to hire new applicants through representatives of the companies.

Terry Buhay, media consultant at Career Fair Canada, discussed how the organization plans these events.

“We [Career Fair Canada] start booking the rooms probably about a year at events. So, that gives us time to market to companies and stuff. We have a team that reaches out to companies across the country,” said Buhay.

Buhay mentioned companies typically like to hire in certain markets and have issues finding those interested in jobs.

He also notes how important it is for employers to connect with potential candidates in person rather than look through resumes online.

“The [employers} need to get a sense that they’re going to, that person’s going to fit into the company culture. They’re going to that as someone they can trust, right? There’s a lot of trust put on employees now at this time that, you like, they’re taking on bigger and bigger roles.”

Statistics Canada reported that the unemployment rate in Canada was 6.5 per cent in September, meaning many Canadians are still searching for employment.

Career Fair Canada sees over 2,000 people attend the event in Regina.

Other job fairs for Career Fair Canada have seen 5,000 people in attendance.

When asked about his enjoyment of the event, Buhay said, “It’s fun to help others find employment. He added, “At the end [of the event], they’re walking out, and they’ll grab me by the arm, and they’ll spin me around and say, thank you so much.”

After the job fair in Regina today, Career Fair Canada will be in Saskatoon tomorrow at TCU Place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
