A butcher in Germany is raising eyebrows with the way he’s dealing with a raccoon infestation in the country. Lately, Germans have been dealing with a major raccoon population boom which has caused problems for countless homeowners in the country. There have been reports that the creatures have been breaking into people’s homes, drinking beer, raiding cupboards, and killing pets. According to German statistics there are approximately two million raccoons in the country which has inspired many to take matters into their own hands to reduce the population of the critters.
Michael Reiss is a butcher in northeast Germany who turned to eating raccoons. Using their meat, he’s made raccoon meatballs, raccoon sausage, breakfast sausage, and even liver sausage. In a recent interview with CNN he says people drive from as far away as 150 kilometers just to try his raccoon meat products.

What does it taste like? According to Reiss, he says it’s not much different than regular sausage. He describes it as being delicate and a little softer than other meat. So far reviews seem to be generally positive about the sausage with Reiss proclaiming that everyone enjoys it.
Raccoons are not native to Germany and were introduced to the country in the 1920’s to be used on fur farms. In 1934 they were released to the wild.
