A few active and former athletes from Regina have received the call that they’ll be inducted into the Regina Sports Hall of Fame this fall.

The hall of fame recognizes and honours citizens who have contributed to sports within the city.

The class of 2019 was presented at a media conference on Tuesday afternoon in front of the Regina Sports Hall of Fame tribute at the Co-operators Centre.

They are as follows:

• Neal Hughes (athlete; football)
• Liane McLean (builder; curler)
• Shannon McGeady (athlete; golf)
• Georgette Reed (athlete; athletics)
• James Hillis (builder; basketball)
• Dave Boan (builder; water polo)

Hillis, who is a former University of Regina basketball player and coach, was one of the inductees who was present for the short event on Tuesday.

He talked about how it’s an honour to be included with other great names who are a part of the hall of fame.

“It’s a big yet small sporting community and I really looked up to a lot of the people who are there,” said Hillis.

Hillis couldn’t believe it when he received the call saying he was one of the latest members to join the hall.

He said it’s very special for him to be named to the same class as former Roughriders fullback Neal Hughes, along with the other athletes and builders.

“I’m a die-hard Rider fan, so I’m familiar with Neal’s career and I enjoyed watching him,” explained Hillis. “It’s a neat class to be in and I’m honoured to be mentioned in the same breath as those people.”
