Second school in Harbour Landing coming to fruition

The Harbour Landing School has been echoing concerns over capacity issues since before 2020 and there’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel on the issue.

It was announced that a location site has been officially secured for a brand new joint-use elementary school.

A Memorandum of Understanding has been co-signed by the Ministry of Education, the City of Regina, the Regina Public School Division, and the Regina Catholic School Division, which outlines that the City of Regina will be responsible for acquiring the land while costs for servicing the land will be shared by the province and city.

The province and school boards are currently working together to determine the servicing requirements, in consultation with the City of Regina.

“The province is experiencing strong economic and population growth and schools are seeing increased enrolments, which is why our government continues to invest in new schools like this one so they may serve our fastest growing communities for generations to come,” says Education Minister, Dustin Duncan.

“We value our collaborative partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan and Regina’s school boards in helping to find solutions to better serve the residents of Regina’s Harbour Landing and South communities,” Regina Mayor Sandra Masters says.

“Through the process of determining the site for this new joint-use facility, we’ve strengthened our relationship for improved future planning to ensure youth in Regina have access to the spaces that they need to learn, connect and grow.”

The new facility will take up eleven acres on the corner of Gordon Road and Campbell Street in Harbour Landing.

“The new joint-use facility will include two elementary schools that can accommodate close to 850 students in total. It will also include a space for a childcare centre and a large community space with a kitchen that both schools and the public can use,” says Duncan.

The new joint-use facility is expected to be open by 2026, and design is still underway, in consultation with the community based on enrolment projections from the Regina Catholic and Public School Divisions

To help alleviate the over-capacity issue right now, the school boards have reevaluated school zones and as a result will be transferring 200 hundred students.
