Could there be a spring election in Saskatchewan?
It turned out to be one of the main discussion topics on Monday at the Saskatchewan Legislature as NDP leader Ryan Meili asked for more clarity from Premier Scott Moe on the matter.
Initially, an election date has been set for October 26. However Premier Scott Moe suggested on Friday there are a number of reasons that would warrant the possibility of an earlier election.
Meili said it’s clear that the premier is playing political games when it comes to election timing.
“Why would he be playing coy instead of being honest and straight forward,” suggested Meili. “When we ask about people, he points fingers elsewhere, he talks politics instead of focusing on what matters most in a time when people are really struggling in this province.”
Premier Moe kept his cards close when talking to reporters on Monday at the legislature. He believes it’s not uncustomary to go to the polls earlier than expected as we approach the four-year mark of the last provincial election.
However he said his party continues to plan for that October 26 date.
“It’s the election date we continue to plan for. But we’re also aware there is a prerogative that the premier has the opportunity to call it early if he should choose,” stated Moe.
“We’re ready and we’ve been ready for [an election] for some time.”
Moe said there are a number of factors that the Sask Party will be considering when making a decision for calling an early election.
The last Saskatchewan election was on April 4, 2016.
