The comeback came just short for the Regina Pats who started their packed weekend Friday night with a 7-5 loss versus the Swift Current Broncos at the iPlex.
After taking a 2-1 lead, a goal-heavy second period saw the Broncos score four goals past Regina’s Max Paddock, who was eventually pulled after allowing six goals on 21 shots.
Kyle Walker and Drew Englot each scored their fifth goals of the season for the Pats to make it a 6-3 game going into the last 20 minutes of regulation.
Jan Cikhart’s first goal as a Pat helped get the wheels in motion for a comeback halfway through the period. Moments later, Austin Pratt netted his 13th of the year to bring the Pats within one goal.
However with an empty net in the last minute of the game in an attempt to tie the game, Swift Current’s Hayden Ostir scored to put the game away for the Broncos.
Buskey, who entered the game in the third period for Regina, kept a clean slate as his teammates attempted to erase a three-goal deficit. Both Paddock and Buskey combined for 18 saves.
Swift Current had a successful showing on special teams going three for four on the power play while collecting a shorthanded goal in the second. The Pats were one for four on the man advantage.
Regina head coach and assistant general manager Dave Struch said his players were doing the right things, but they missed on some bounces.
The Pats and Broncos meet again when they face off at the Brandt Centre Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
Those who cannot attend the game can listen to the live broadcast on 620 CKRM beginning with the pre-game show at 6:35 p.m.
