The BKT World Men’s Curling Championship has taken over Temple Gardens Centre in Moose Jaw this week and not only has it brought in thousands of curling fans, it’s also sparked a love of the sport amongst Saskatchewan youth.
“One of the greatest things about the sport of curling is how accessible it can be and how easy it is you can play at such a young age and such an old age. It’s one of the few sports that’s really built like that, so it’s amazing,” stated Quinn Murphy, Youth Engagement Coordinator Philanthropy and Youth Impacts with Curling Canada.
Tuesday morning approximately one thousand kids will be filling the arena to watch teams curl, which curlers enjoy because they tend to feed off that energy from the crowd.
“We’ve had the school program run this week (with) approximately three thousand kids coming in over the next few days, so it’s going to be loud in here for the morning draws,” noted Murphy. It’s a lot of fun seeing the energy and the fans feed off of it, the players feed off it, and it’s such a great time.”
Thanks to programs like “Rocks and Rings,” curling has reached the younger generation and instilling an interest and passion in the sport while allowing kids to meet some of the biggest names in Curling.
“It’s been awesome. We were in tons of schools in Moose Jaw and surrounding area and even some of those schools got a chance to have an athlete visit from some of the bets teams in the world here in Moose Jaw. That was awesome to see. They got to meet some of the biggest role models in their own schools and they got to do some floor curling with them,” Murphy said.
The BKT Men’s World Championship is on until April 6th in Moose Jaw with the Brad Jacobs foursome representing Canada. Ticket and draw information can be found by clicking here.
