Sask. Government sends out advisory after invasive Zebra Mussel found on aquarium products

If you’ve purchased moss balls or algal products since the start of the year, the Government of Saskatchewan is asking you to throw them away.

The invasive Zebra Mussel has been detected on numerous occasions on those products, according to the Ministry of Environment.

Geri Geiger with the Ministry of Environment said they are also asking people not to flush the products down the toilet.

“We just don’t want them going into any municipal system or into a storm sewer or into the environment in anyway,” she said.

Geiger said proper disposal instructions are posted on the government’s website.

She also notes that the Zebra Mussels found have been very small, in some cases the size of a grain of sand.

So just because you can’t see them, it does not mean they’re not there.

Zebra Mussels are native to the Black and Caspian seas region in southeastern Europe.

However they’ve now been found throughout Canada, as well as 34 states in the U.S..
