The Canadian Grain Commission has announced several changes to the grain grading guide this year.

Current mildew standards for red spring wheat, red winter wheat are being replaced. Updated standard samples for number 1 and 2 will take effect August first.

The mildew standard for number 3 will no longer be used as a grading factor in those grades.

The standards are being changed after research found that mildew had minimal impact on flour yield and refinement, dough properties, and baking quality.

However, mildew remains a grading factor for other grades as it provides additional quality protection to accompany sprout tolerances.

The splits tolerances in number 2 green peas will be changed from 1 to 3 percent on August first across Canada, better reflecting how the industry is exporting number 2 green peas.

The tolerance for inconspicuous admixture in number 1,2 and 3 canola will be changed from 5 percent to 1 percent on August first.

This is in response to quality concerns with canola samples containing 5 percent admixture.

The tolerance for excreta in 1,2 and 3 mustard is being updated from 1 kernel-sized piece in 500 grams to .01 percent to bring it in line with other official grains to ensure quality control.
