SaskPower warns of overbilling text message scam

SaskPower is warning customers of a recent text message scam.

SaskPower’s Joel Cherry says customer service is getting multiple calls of people receiving text messages from someone claiming to be from the utility giving refunds for overbilling the customer. “If one were to actually click the link in those texts, you would be brought to a site where you are asked for banking information. Needless to say this is not SaskPower, it’s a scammer that is looking to get your financial information for their own profit and you should not under any circumstances click those messages.”

Cherry says this is not how the Crown communicates with customers. “We don’t communicate with our customers via text, we don’t make online transactions like e-transfers for example and just in general we take our customers information privacy very seriously.”

He says customers should be careful and if something doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t.

SaskPower says this is not the first time a text scam like this has happened and adds it seems to come in cycles.

More information on protecting yourself from scams like this is posted on the SaskPower website.
