Trudeau recalls MPs to House of Commons to pass emergency measures

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has confirmed that the House of Commons will reconvene on Tuesday at noon.

During his update outside of his home from Ottawa on Sunday morning, he told Canadians this is to pass emergency measures that will put the federal government’s $82 billion economic strategy into effect.

Trudeau thanked members of opposition parties and house leaders for their efforts to make this possible. Members of Parliament will debate and work to pass the legislation as quickly as possible.

“I know that together we can protect Canadians, save jobs and set the groundwork for our economy to rebound after this crisis,” stated Trudeau.

The federal Emergencies Act was brought up once again during the prime minister’s daily update.

Trudeau said there are many things that can be done at the local, municipal and provincial levels, however the Emergencies Act is a step that can and should be taken when all other options have been exhausted.

“We continue to work very closely with provinces and other jurisdictions to make sure they are able to do the things that need to be done,” he said.

“We will continue to look at if it’s necessary to move forward with the Emergencies Act.”

In Canada, there are 19 deaths, which has not changed from Saturday. There are now 1,338 COVID-19 cases that have been reported in the country.
