Dave Struch happy with Pats play one week into season

A 1-2-1 record isn’t  the most ideal, but the Regina Pats are showing they’re continuing their way up the re-building ladder a week into the WHL’s East Division season.

Obviously 15-year-old Connor Bedard has been good with eight points in four games, but coach Dave Struch said they’ve been satisfied with the team’s game as a whole thus far, adding they’re better than their record shows.

“We’ve been really happy with the way we’ve played,” Struch said. “I know a lot of people haven’t been at the games, but if they’ve watched them on TV or the computer, they’ve seen us play really good hockey in the young season,” said Struch.

For 15-year-old Connor Bedard it’s been a start that most people see out of a 20-year-old veteran, the WHL’s first ever exceptional prospect has four goals and four assists through the teams first four games.

Struch said one thing that some might not recognize is Bedard’s ability to fit in and play with older guys.

“We had an opportunity to watch him when he was over in Sweden and he looked very good at this level over there, and he was playing with the under-20 league and that was all players that were 18,19 and 20, so we saw and knew coming in that he could play with an older group, it’s something his done for awhile now,” Struch said.

“He’s (Bedard) done a lot of  really good things for us and he helps our team immensely, but we have a lot of really good other guys too, it’s not for a lack of an effort from our whole team, but yeah he’s done some really good things for us for sure,” Struch added.

The Pats will have a chance to get to .500 Saturday night when they face the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Catch the game at 7:00 p.m. on 620 CKRM.
