A global women’s motorcycle relay is making its way through Canada this weekend and Saskatchewan early next week.

The Women Riders World Relay is an event uniting female riders from around the world by having women rider together and pass a baton from country to country.

WRWR’s Canadian Ambassador Maria O’Reilly says this initiative is aimed at showing the motorcycle industry that women are a fast growing segment of the market and that should be reflected. “We need the gear that is safe for us, we need the bikes that are made for us and typically that’s not the way the industry has been working.”

The relay started in Scotland on February 27th and is making it’s way around the world. “I believe the total countries that it’s going through is 84, the total number of registered riders in Canada is 279, the total number of kilometers we are travelling in Canada is 67,000 in 11 days.”

O’Reilly says the baton will be arriving in Vancouver on Saturday and riders in Saskatchewan will be bringing the baton through the Moose Jaw and Regina area on Tuesday before continuing east. She adds that this initiative may have started as a message to the industry, but the feeling of it has evolved. “The amazing thing that has happened from all of this is that women from all over the world have gotten together and are supporting each other, encouraging each other, riding with each other. They have made new friends, they’ve made connections.”

O’Reilly says it’s amazing to see the amount of support and sisterhood that has come out of this.

The relay will come to an end in January 2020 in UAE.
