Sask. snowstorm expected to provide limited improvement to dry soil moisture conditions

A former soil professor says this week’s snowstorm across Saskatchewan will provide limited support for dry soil moisture conditions.

Professor Les Henry of Saskatoon says soil moisture is very dry across most of the grainbelt.

An estimated two inches of snow fell this week across much of the province and Henry says there will be limited benefits from the moisture.

He says most of the snow will end up in ditches and tree stands.

He says some fields with standing stubble may see benefit of half an inch of moisture, which would help with germination.

However, Henry says farmers will need timely rains throughout the growing season for an average crop because of very limited soil moisture reserves.
