Saskatchewan has the best solar exposure in the country and it needs to be put to good use. That from NDP Leader Ryan Meili in reaction to the news that SaskPower’s net metering program has reached its cap, meaning no more customers can take advantage of it for solar installations and premium credits.
SaskPower said in a news release the Crown Corporation would review the program to see how it could be offered in a fiscally sustainable way. Meili suggests the SaskParty doesn’t take the renewable industry or the threat to climate change seriously.
The NDP is calling for a more robust program to fill the gap. Meili suggests a loan program that would provide assessments and financing options for clean energy installations or retrofits. The funds would be paid back over time from the customer’s power or energy bills, based on the value of the power generated to go back into the grid or fossil fuel energy saved by the installation.
Meili believes the fact so many people subscribed to the program shows there is an appetite for using renewable energy in Saskatchewan.
