Sask harvest reaches 39 percent complete

Saskatchewan farmers made some harvest progress despite rain this past week.

Provincial crops analyst Shannon Friesen says 39 percent of crops are in the bin, up from 23 percent last week but well behind the average of 62 percent for this date.

She says rainfall ranged from a trace to 94 millimeters near Ituna and Lipton.

Harvest ranges from 58 percent in the southwest to 22 percent in the east-central region.

She says yields are average to above average, but quality has suffered from recent rain.

Friesen says the majority of crop damage this past week was due to hail, strong winds, localized flooding, geese and wildlife.

Topsoil moisture is rated 15 percent surplus, 79 percent adequate and six percent short.

Most crop has been harvested in tough and damp condition and grain is being put into dryers and aeration bins.
