Métis Nation-Saskatchewan declares state of emergency due to COVID-19

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Métis Nation- Saskatchewan (MN-S) has declared a state of emergency for its 75,000 citizens in the province.

In a news release Saturday, the MN-S said that the state of emergency was issued to urge action and further collaboration between all levels of government to respond to the challenges facing Métis communities.

MN-S said that they have worked with the federal government to acquire personal protection equipment and additional funding, but they say they need more resources to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

The release goes on to say “until the essential and lifesaving needs of Métis peoples are properly met, MN-S must declare a province-wide state of emergency on behalf of it’s citizens.

The Métis Nation is hoping for better communication regarding confirmed cases, further coordination of food and essential services, as well as stronger parameters to protect their communities, including travel bans to the north.
