The city of Regina is reminding residents that a bylaw banning single use plastic bags at retailers comes into effect February 1st, 2022.

The city delayed implementing the bylaw due to COVID-19, but began a campaign to reintroduce the bylaw with it’s updated rollout date last fall.

The ban will prevent businesses from giving customers plastic bags for goods at the checkout. The Move is intended to reduce waste entering the landfill, prevent plastic littler and extend the life of Regina’s landfill.

After The first of February businesses and individuals found to not be compliant with the bylaw could potentially face fines of up to $10,000 for multiple infractions.

The average Canadian will use close to 300 plastic bags in a given year – which means Regina residents use approximately 40,000,000 plastic bags every single year.
