Connections between Stanley Cup Champion Golden Knights and Regina Pats

The Vegas Golden Knights claimed the franchise’s first Stanley Cup on Tuesday and some former members of the Regina Pats organization had a helping hand in the championship victory.

On the ice, former Pat, Chandler Stephenson claimed his second Stanley Cup ring with the Golden Knights. After he earned his first Stanley Cup championship in Washington eliminating the Golden Knights in 2018, the Saskatoon product was a key figure during the Knight’s playoff drive. The 29-year-old became the 10th player in NHL history to win a Stanley Cup for a team that he previously defeated in the finals.

Stephenson had 20 points (10G-10A) in 22 games for Vegas including three game-winning-goals during the 2023 playoffs.

Before entering the NHL, the forward spent four seasons with the Pats, including scoring 30 goals in 2013-14.

Former Pats head coach Bob Lowes also became a Stanley Cup champion on Tuesday as since 2016 he has been the Golden Knights Assistant Director of Player Personnel. Lowes was the Pats head coach from 2001-2004 and won the WHL Coach of the Year and CHL Coach of the Year awards in 2001-02. Before joining the Pats coaching staff, he was a player with Regina from 1982-1984 and was the team’s captain in 1983-84.

Vegas Scout, Erin Ginnell is also a member of the 2023 Stanley Cup champions. The father of former Pat, Riley, played in Regina himself during the 1986-87 season.
